Oregon Writers Colony offers members access to the Colonyhouse, a wonderful house with a log cabin interior. Colonyhouse is located in Rockaway Beach and affords spectacular views of the Oregon coast. Members may reserve the Colonyhouse for individual or group retreats.
Colonyhouse provides private writing spaces, as well as a place to gather in community. It is owned and managed by volunteers, by writers for writers. It is equipped with comfortable workspaces and common areas, wi-fi, and a wonderful log cabin ambience.
Colonyhouse overlooks the Pacific Ocean to the west, Lake Lytle to the east, and is within a half block to beach access by foot.
The house sleeps eight comfortably, and has two full bathrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, and ample writing spaces with water views.
The site of frequent writing workshops and retreats, it is also available for weekend and weekday writing use by Oregon Writers Colony members.
In 1988 OWC purchased the three-story log house built in 1936 by John Steiner. Henry Steiner and his sons John and Fred later worked on Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood, and they crafted a number of cabins in Oregon in the 1920s – 30s. The hallmarks of a Steiner cabin include hand-cut and peeled logs, porches supported by forked trees, large fireplaces crafted from glacier or river rock, stair rails fashioned from naturally curved logs, and doorknobs and shelves carved from roots of uniquely shaped branches. The Colonyhouse is a stunning example of John Steiner’s Pacific Northwest craftsmanship.

About Rockaway Beach, Oregon
A small coastal community, it’s large enough for good accommodations and great food, but small enough not to be spoiled by too much tourist traffic. (The exception is the 4th of July, when Rockaway Beach has one of the largest fireworks displays on the Oregon coast.) OWC is proud to be a part of this community and a supporter of the new library.
