OWC Connects With Writers and Readers at Wordstock III

OWC's Spacious Double Booth

Writers, readers and book lovers of all stripes converged on the Oregon Convention Center November 10-11 for Wordstock III, Portland’s popular bookfest. Some 185 writers read from their work and discussed the craft at seminars on eight different stages surrounding exhibits representing bookstores, publishers, writing programs and organizations.

The Oregon Writers Colony double booth drew lots of interest from area writers, as well as writing teachers from elementary through MFA programs. OWC event and workshop flyers flew off the counter when visitors learned of the programs and, especially, the Colonyhouse available to members. Rae Richen and Marlene Howard were on hand to explain the Colonyhouse Development and Accessibility Campaign, aided by an eye-catching display designed by Maisie MacKinnon.

They were joined by volunteers Jan Bear, Myrna Daly , Art Johnson , Linda Leslie , Martha Miller, Nancy Reese, Tom Snethen, Diane Wagner , Marsha Weber, Bob Zimmer , and Bob Howard for booth set-up and takedown. Steve Leslie also took photos. Clint Morrison and Marlene Hill Taevs did double duty at our OWC authors table, along with Robert Dugoni, Phil Margolin, Marilyn McFarlane , Jim Petersen , Jennie Shortridge , and Trinette Weber.

Book signers at the OWC Booth included:

Phil Margolin, whose 12 legal thrillers all became New York Times bestsellers, will sign copies of his latest, “Proof Positive,” and other novels. His new “Executive Privilege” is due out in summer 2008.
Marilyn McFarlane will have hot-off-the-press copies of her new “Healthy Seniors Cookbook,” featuring 190 recipes, a 6-week menu plan and other help for fast, flavorful meals and a wide selection of low-sodium and low-cholesterol dishes.
Clint Morrison, Eugene, has run a marathon on every continent — including Antarctica. He has gathered the best tales of his adventures in “Running the Seven Continents: Tales of Travel and the Marathon.”
Jennie Shortridge , author of “Riding with the Queen” and “Eating Heaven,” has a third novel due out in May 2008. “Love and Biology at the Center of the Universe” was inspired by her time at Colonyhouse — and partly written there!
Robert Dugoni, Seattle attorney and author of the bestselling legal/political thrillers “The Jury Master” and “Damage Control,” will return to Portland February 2-3, 2008, to teach an OWC workshop on “Writing a New York Times Bestseller.”

Jim Petersen draws on 40 years of counseling and ministry to describe what happens when communication goes awry and damages relationships in “Why Don’t We Listen Better? Communicating and Connecting in Relationships.” Practical techniques to improve talking and listening skills include the Talker-Listener card.

Marlene Hill, “Alone With Michelangelo.” From Tuscany to Rome, a woman travels alone and spends most of her time with Michelangelo and others of his era.  Her next book concentrates on Venice, the city of the sea.
Trinette Weber continues the nonfiction lineup with “From Shaniko to Pearl Harbor,” the true story of a 15-year-old runaway who was on the dock of the submarine base at Pearl Harbor when the bombs began to fall.
