Contests

Oregon Writers Colony sponsors annual writing contests.

Writers may compete for prizes in fiction and narrative nonfiction and occasionally poetry.

2014 Fiction and Nonfiction Stories Contest

The contest is open to OWC members and nonmember residents of Oregon and Washington. Entries of no more than 2,500 words will be accepted between April 1 and July 1.

Deadlines/entry fees:

Early bird: April 1-April 30: $10 per entry for OWC members; $15 per entry for nonmembers

Regular: May 1 – July 1: $15 per entry for OWC members; $20 per entry for nonmembers

Entries will be judged in two rounds. An OWC judging panel will review all entries and select seven finalists in each category for review by our final judges. The final judging will be completed in late September.

Judges in the 2014 OWC Writing Contest are Stevan Allred (Fiction) and Jen Weaver-Neist (Narrative Nonfiction).

Awards in Both Categories

1st place: $250 and one year of free membership in Oregon Writers Colony. Winner will be invited to read at Stumptown Lit on Oct. 19, 2014, in Portland. The winner will be featured in Colonygram and an excerpt published on the OWC website.

2nd place: $100 and one year of free membership in Oregon Writers Colony. The winner will be listed in Colonygram and on the website.

3rd place: $50 and one year of free membership in Oregon Writers Colony. The winner will be listed in Colonygram and on website.

First Honorable Mention: Certificate of Achievement. The winner will be listed in Colonygram and on the website.

Other Honorable Mentions: Certificate of Achievement. Winners will be listed in Colonygram and on the website.

Multiple entries are accepted with one fee per entry. Only one entry can place in the top three, but other winning entries will be recognized as honorable mentions.

Judging criteria, in no particular order:

Hook, theme, emotional truth, evoking emotion in reader, originality, character development, tension, structure, plot, sensory detail, clarity, satisfying ending.

Submissions (Fiction Short Stories or Narrative Nonfiction Short Stories, paper or electronic):

  • Original, unpublished story
  • Word count: 2,500 maximum
  • Double-spaced, at least one-inch margins, Courier or Times New Roman, at least 12-point font
  • Title, word count, and category (fiction or nonfiction) on first page
  • NO author name anywhere on the manuscript
  • Multiple submissions allowed
  • One entry fee per submission
  • Final deadline: Entries must be postmarked July 1, 2014

Fee per entry:

  • Electronic submission: add $5 for handling and printing
  • Early bird, April 1-April 30: $10 per entry for OWC members; $15 per entry for nonmembers
  • Regular, May 1-July 1: $15 per entry for OWC members; $20 per entry for nonmembers
  • Optional fee for constructive critiques from judging panel: add $10

Paper submission packet – one per entry – must include:

  • Four stapled copies of your entry. NO author name anywhere on the manuscript.
  • Business envelope, labeled “Fiction” or “Nonfiction,” containing:
  • Check for entry fee. Can combine with optional critiques fee.
  • SASP (postcard for receipt/your piece of mind)
  • Business envelope SASE if requesting critiques.
  • 3×5 card (no odd-sized cards) with the following information:
    1. “Fiction” or “Nonfiction”
    2. Title of submission
    3. Name, address, phone, email address*
    4. OWC “member” or “nonmember”
    5. Where you learned of the contest
    6. “Critiques” if including optional critiques fee.
