*Even if You Don’t Think You Can
Do you find yourself overwhelmed by the jargon of website creation and then get stuck before you get started?
Did you buy an expensive website-builder program and give up in despair?
Maybe you’re even pretty good with technology — you know how to run Microsoft Word, how to get online, how to maneuver around the web — and you’re not sure why it’s so hard.
You don’t have to promise yourself to get your website online this year. It can be done in one day.
Take your website from zero to ready for prime time in Oregon Writers Colony’s “Build Your Website in One Day” workshop, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2015, at TaborSpace in Portland.
In this workshop, website builder and OWC webmaster Jan Bear will lead you through the steps to get your WordPress website online, add the plugins you need, install a site design, load your About page and Book description to your site, and add images.
Along the way, you’ll learn how to manage your site and gain the skills to make it a book-marketing and platform-building machine.
We’ll also explore how to use your site to advance your writing career and strategies to make your site attract and engage your ideal readers.
In order to get all this done in a day, you’ll do some preliminary work beforehand:
- Choose and register your domain name (about $15 per year)
- Buy web hosting (about $10 per month)
- Choose a design for your site (Start with a free theme, or buy a premium theme for $50 and up. You can change the theme at any time.)
- Start writing the text that will engage your readers and help you sell books
With complete step-by-step instructions for these tasks, which you’ll receive in plenty of time before the workshop, you’ll be surprised how quickly you can get it done.
When you sign up for the workshop, you’ll get a free ebook that focuses on what you need to know and do ahead of time to create a website that works for you.
And if you have any problems along the way, help is just an email away.
When you arrive at the workshop, we’ll be ready to talk strategy, organization, and how to promote your website — and your books. We’ll get your site set up and put you in the driver’s seat. By doing the work yourself, you’ll develop the skills to manage your site and keep it running smoothly, as well as making the strategic decisions to build your writing career.
To get the most out of this workshop, you’ll need a computer with a working WiFi connection and a basic understanding of how to maneuver on the web.
Because this is an intensive, hands-on workshop, we need to set a limit of 10 participants. Sign up now to get your site online on March 28 and check that task off your to-do list.
