Great news from one of our out-of-state members, Emme Devonish. “I wanted to share with OWC members that I am an Adjunct Professor in the English Department this semester at San Jacinto College in Houston. I am teaching three English composition classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I am responsible for approximately 75 students.”
Going sailing tipped the first domino in Christie Gorsline‘s writing career. Now, with the help of a muse at Colonyhouse, her first book will be published this fall by Inkwater Press. Plotting a New Course: Empty Nest to Life Vestis a travel memoir. Faced with job dissatisfaction and children heading to college, Christie and husband Rick grabbed their confusion and shaped it into a vision: they would sail around the world. The first wrinkle was they had no experience sailing and didn’t own a boat. Through images and metaphors recorded in journals during six years at sea, an old way of life unravels and a new tapestry is woven. A segment of the manuscript won first place for non-fiction in the 2009 Willamette Writers Kay Snow Contest. Chapters from the book have appeared in Living Aboard magazine and on National Public Radio.
Don Colburn’s third collection of poetry, a chapbook titled Because You Might Not Remember, is due out in November from Finishing Line Press, where it was a finalist in this year’s national competition.
Sometimes a Great Commotion, by Carolyn J. Rose and her co-author (and husband) Mike Nettleton, will be out in September from Krill Press. This sequel to The Big Grabowski is again set in the fictional Oregon coast town of Devil’s Harbor, and involves many of the usual suspects. The book revolves around the murder of a for-hire tree-sitter, amidst the commotion caused by thousands who flock to the tiny town to view an amazing image scorched into a breaded crab cake.
Rose and Nettleton contributed some of their favorite dishes to Killer Recipes, a recently released cookbook, the proceeds of which will benefit the American Cancer Society. Killer Recipes was the brainchild of North Carolina mystery writer, Susan Whitfield, author of Genesis Beach, Just North of Luck, and Hell Swamp.
Rose is the author of the recently released mainstream mystery Hemlock Lake, and Rose and Nettleton collaborated on the cozy romp The Big Grabowski.
