Jack Estes publishes essay

May 28, 2014 By Becky Kjelstrom Leave a Comment

Jack Estes wrote a guest column for The Oregonian about the meaning of Memorial Day. His parents, who both served in World War II, are buried in Willamette National Cemetery. Estes himself served in Southeast Asia and recalls how little he thought of Memorial Day when he was an 18-year-old Marine trying to stay alive long enough to return home. The passing years have made the meaning more important he says, as “those boys, who perished, are back with me again.”

Estes is the author of the Vietnam memoir, “A Field of Innocence.”

May Readings at Rain or Shine Coffee House

November 15, 2013 By Becky Kjelstrom

Oregon Writers Colony has partnered with Bill Cameron and Rain or Shine Coffee House to help out with the wildly popular Thursday evening reading series. The series is open to published authors and as-yet unpublished writers alike. OWC will handle the scheduling while Bill takes care of “handling” the readers and the folks at Rain or Shine keep the coffee flowing. OWC members who would like to serve as hosts for the evening are welcome as well. You do not have to be an OWC member to participate.

Mark your calendars!
